在通古斯語中，「薩滿」這個音代表「知者」。
在最早的體系裡，薩滿連通天地，與宇宙世間萬物的神靈取得聯繫，為族人取回有利於存活的智慧，廣義而論，他們是為替族人探索與萬物合作的方式以保障部族延續的智慧傳承者，是巫醫，也是最早的研究人員，藉由與自然泛靈學習，詳細的觀察萬物運作的方式，他們保存對人類發展有用的各種知識。
薩滿又被稱為巫，觀中國古代的「巫」，上下兩橫，代表天與地，中間的一豎代表連通，兩旁負責祭祀、跳舞者即為巫者。隨著人類社會發展，部落逐漸轉變為極權的城邦或帝國，社會型態的變異讓巫者的角色越發多元，在權力中心，他們化身為祭司、是陰陽官，也是研究天文曆法的欽天監學者；在地方民間，他們保留了醫者的角色，成為方士或中醫的先祖，循宗教與醫藥的路徑，研究健康養生的法門。
隨著宗教成為皇權以外的巨大勢力，影響了全球，充滿靈知的巫者隨著修行意識的提升，也或許進入宗教成為神職或修行者，透過將意識連接到神聖源頭，實踐內在的真知，對社會帶來正面的影響。
而到了當代，人們將生命的重點，逐漸從社會移轉到個人，修行未必要服務於個人，也可以單純為了自己，他們或許是無人知曉的神秘主義者，又或許是活躍於大眾視野的藝術家、音樂家等創作者，
無論身份如何轉變，無論是否還記得薩滿的過去記憶，做人與天地萬物神靈之間的橋樑，將「靈知」帶向世界，為人們的健康與福祉努力，永遠是巫者潛意識中會做的選擇。

What Is a Shaman?
In the Tungusic language, the word shaman means "one who knows."
In the earliest traditions, the shaman served as a bridge between Heaven and Earth — forging connections with the spirits of all things in the cosmos, and retrieving for the tribe the wisdom needed to survive. Broadly speaking, shamans were the keepers of knowledge who explored ways for the people to cooperate with all of existence, ensuring the continuity of the community. They were healers and the world's earliest researchers — learning from the animistic forces of nature, observing with great care the workings of all things, and preserving every form of knowledge useful to human development.
The shaman is also known in Chinese as wu (巫). In the ancient written character, the two horizontal strokes represent Heaven and Earth; the vertical stroke connecting them represents the bridge between worlds; and the figures on either side, performing ritual and dance, are the wu themselves. As human societies evolved and tribes gave way to autocratic city-states and empires, the role of the shaman diversified. At the centers of power, they became priests, diviners of yin and yang, and court astronomers who studied the heavens and the calendar. In local communities, they preserved their role as healers — becoming the ancestors of the fangshi and traditional Chinese medicine — pursuing the path of religion and medicine to explore the arts of health and longevity.
As religion grew into a force rivaling imperial power and spread across the world, shamans — deepened by spiritual practice — often entered religious life as clergy or monastics. By connecting their consciousness to a sacred source, they embodied an inner knowing and brought its light to bear upon the world.
In the modern era, as the focus of human life has gradually shifted from society toward the individual, spiritual practice need not be in service of the collective — it can simply be for oneself. These individuals may be mystics known to no one, or artists, musicians, and creators alive in the public eye.
Whatever form they take, whether or not they remember their shamanic origins — building a bridge between humanity and the spirits of Heaven, Earth, and all things, carrying gnosis into the world, and working toward the health and wellbeing of others: this is always the choice the shaman's deeper self will make.

シャーマンとは何か？
ツングース語において、「シャーマン」という音は「知る者」を意味します。
最初期の体系において、シャーマンは天と地をつなぐ存在でした。宇宙と世界に宿るあらゆる精霊と交信し、部族が生き延びるために必要な知恵を取り戻す役割を担っていました。広い意味で言えば、彼らは万物との共存の道を探り、部族の継続を守る知恵の継承者でした。巫医であり、世界最初の探求者でもあった彼らは、自然の汎霊から学び、万物の働きを詳細に観察し、人類の発展に有益なあらゆる知識を保存してきました。
シャーマンは漢字では「巫（かんなぎ）」とも呼ばれます。古代中国の「巫」という文字を見ると、上下の二本の横線が天と地を表し、それをつなぐ中央の縦線が天地の橋渡しを意味し、両脇で祭祀や舞を担う者が巫者そのものです。人類社会の発展とともに部族が専制的な城邑や帝国へと変容するにつれ、巫者の役割はますます多様化しました。権力の中枢では、祭司となり、陰陽を読む官となり、天文暦法を研究する欽天監の学者となりました。地方の民間では、医者としての役割を保ち続け、方士や中医学の先祖となって、宗教と医学の道を歩みながら、健康と養生の法を探求しました。
宗教が皇権をも凌ぐ巨大な力となり世界を席巻するにつれ、霊知に満ちた巫者たちは修行意識の高まりとともに宗教の世界へと入り、聖職者や修行者となっていきました。意識を聖なる源へとつなぎ、内なる真知を実践することで、社会に光をもたらしました。
現代においては、人々の関心が社会から個人へと移るにつれ、修行は必ずしも他者への奉仕である必要はなく、ただ自分自身のためであってもよいとされるようになりました。彼らはあるいは誰にも知られない神秘主義者かもしれず、またあるいは世に知られたアーティスト、ミュージシャン、クリエイターかもしれません。
姿がどのように変わろうとも、シャーマンとしての記憶があるかどうかに関わらず——天地万物の精霊と人間との橋となり、「霊知」を世界へと運び、人々の健康と幸福のために働くこと。それは、巫者の無意識が常に選び取ることです。
